Editors' Notes This inventive album took listeners on a journey that gave props to Joni Mitchell (“Got ’Til It’s Gone”), denounced homophobia (“Free Xone”) and embraced freakiness (“My Need”). From the disarming spoken interludes to the consistent messages of self-acceptance, The Velvet Rope is deeply personal. Jackson shifts nimbly between styles and influences—disco.

This album brought about her phenomenal The Velvet Rope Tour which gave a further glimpse into how wonderfully talented Janet is as an artist in her own right. It is known that this album has been overlooked in the past and has not been given its due credit which is a shame but it truly stands out as one of Janet's top 3 albums/5().

Janet killed me softly with the Velvet Rope CD in that she was singing my life with her words. This is not only the best work of Janet's, but the best of producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis as well. The CD opens with the clever and mysterious title track that invites us into a lair filled with demons that she bravely faced at that point in her life.
