Soul Provider finally sees Michael Bolton decide upon which direction his musical career will be heading in and, to my mind at least, he chose unwisely. Gone is any trace of his affinity for rock music and in its place are a series of smouldering ballads which are so ardently delivered that Bolton seems to be lampooning himself.

michael bolton's "soul provider" cd is the best that bolton has to offer. this cd was his big "break through" album and it shows. i wanted to see if i could list some favorite tracks but, quite honestly, i could not do it. every song on this album is a winning hit. i actually remember when this album first came out and listening to it again just brought back a flood gate of nostalgic memories /5(97).

Bolton produced most of the record himself, and he teamed with the cream of the era's romantic rock ballad writers, people like Diane Warren (who gets five co-credits here) and Desmond Child, while the R&B copy this time was Ray Charles' version of "Georgia on My Mind." He also reclaimed "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" from Laura Branigan.
